| A 13 year-old-girl is given the job of being the teacher for a remote Chinese village for one month and promised extra pay if she does not lose a single student. When one student's mother becomes ill, forcing him to drop out of school, she and the class together focus their attention on getting him back. During one scene, the mayor walks by during her math lesson and is impressed by how diligently they are working on a problem of calculating how many days of work it would take carrying bricks at the local factory to raise enough money to travel to the city, not realizing that this is a practical problem for them and not just an abstract exercise.

Where are the new works of mathematical fiction?: As you can see from this chronological listing, this database includes many works of mathematical fiction for each year from 1990 to 2025. Strangely, only two are listed for 2026, so far. Either less mathematical fiction is being published than in previous years or I'm just having more trouble finding it. If you know of any works of fiction that should be added to this list, especially recently published ones, please let me know. (Keep in mind that I do not include self-published works or children's fiction that just covers elementary mathematical concepts.) Thanks!
