A more important difference, and I'm sure this is quite intentional on the author's part, is the role of math. In Tom Godwin's story, math was inarguable and straight forward: an equation is either true or it is not, and there was no question as to how the stowaway had to be dealt with.

Lee's retelling, in contrast, explicitly lists the axioms of a total ordering on a set, which are written in terms of inequalities rather than equalities. It also includes a counter-example (in the form of the captain's three favorite books, whose pairwise ordering in terms of preference does not satisfy the axioms.) This mathematical concept is used to raise questions regarding the priorities of those who chose which people, which memories, and which "stories" would be preserved and brought to the new planet.

A few other mathematical terms (e.g. fractals, infinitessimals, etc.) are casually tossed around as well, but are not integrated into the plot in the same way that ordered sets are.

As far as I know, this short story has been published only in Meeting Infinity, the fourth book in the Infinity Project series edited by Jonathan Strahan.
