A two-part TV special by the famous Italian director Roberto Rosselini about the life of René Descartes. Although it mostly presents Descartes as a philosopher rather than as a mathematician, the film does show him doing some computations for Isaac Beeckman and he occasionally mentions his views on mathematics.

I cannot honestly say that I think this is a "great film". It feels like the sort of movie one might be shown school when the teacher is absent or otherwise occupied. Still, it is a biopic of an important mathematician by an important director, and so I am grateful to Raul Prisacariu for writing to let me know about it.

The primary distributor of this film is The Criterion Collection, but it can also be streamed for free on the Internet Archive (see here and here).

Exciting News: The 1,600th entry was recently added to this database of mathematical fiction! Also, for those of you interested in non-fictional math books let me (shamelessly) plug the recent release of the second edition of my soliton theory textbook.
