| In this romance novel, a woman who has interest in mathematics and no interest in finding a husband beguiles an Italian artist.
Like many of the other works of "mathematical romance", this one is historical fiction. I couldn't find a date anywhere, but since Charles Babbage attends a party in the first chapter, it is safe to say that it is sometime in the Victorian era. Here are two excerpts from the first meeting between the two future lovers:
Note that there is also a work of historical fiction in this database about Luca Pacioli, though that one is not a romance. I continue to be both pleased and amazed at the number of romance novels about female mathematicians. (See the list of "Similar Works" below for some examples.) It pleases me because it would seem to indicate a broader interest (or at least tolerance of) mathematics in the general public, and amazed because they all seem so similar to me from one to the other that I am surprised they can all be profitable. This is not a genre I particularly enjoy, so I may simply not be able to discern the differences between them. Moreover, I haven't read the entire novel, but I actually did like the passages above that I pulled from a free sample online! If you have read this book and can give it a more thorough review than I have, please write to let me know. |

Exciting News: The 1,600th entry was recently added to this database of mathematical fiction! Also, for those of you interested in non-fictional math books
let me (shamelessly) plug the recent release of the second edition of my soliton theory textbook.
